Beauty

Quite recently, I snagged a bottle of LebeL Viege Medicated Essence from the Number76 online store during a store-wide sale. It normally retails for $90.00 but I got it for $70.00 (not including shipping). It’s a little pricey, but hair and scalp care is something I want to invest in.

Often when I visit Number76 (a hair salon chain originally from Japan with several outlets in Southeast Asia), one of the things I would look forward to is the hair serum that the hair stylist will spritz all over the roots of my hair and then massage into my scalp. It smells really nice and herbal, and the cooling sensation is heavenly.

[Just a disclaimer before I go on; I don’t think what I purchased is exactly the same since what they use in store comes in a white plastic spray bottle (I see something similar retailing on the online shop for $37.00), and what I have comes in a dark coloured, good quality, solid bottle: nevertheless, the effect and aroma aren’t too far apart.]

I’ve always had really thin, fine and limp hair since young. My parting has always been glaringly obvious since I was in primary school. Just a quick look at my baby pictures or identity card from those days will confirm the above holds true. And genetically, let’s just say that I have many bald-headed uncles so I’ve for sure not won in the genetic lottery department.

Fast forward to my early secondary school years, where my mum bought a package for me at Jean Yip, and every time I visited, the hairdressers would go on about how I have thin hair and then encourage me to use some anti-hair loss serum.

There was a time in my life where my worried mother would spray copious amounts of the stuff into my scalp. And then she would try to console herself with the idea that I could always wear a wig in my old age when I’m bald.

Maybe not so surprisingly, I’ve noticed that my hairline seems to be receding as quickly as the shoreline, and aging/balding is catching up faster than one would like to believe. Which probably explains why: (a) my forehead looks even bigger; and (b) the shininess of my forehead becomes more readily apparent.

My mother always checked (and sometimes still does check) my forehead to make sure my baby hairs are still growing. See, as a woman, to be balding is far more frowned upon and unfortunate if it were to happen to a man (but I’ll save the eyerolls directed at our misogynistic society for another day).

My present hair/forehead situation. I have thin hair, and it doesn’t seem to grow very evenly. My hair is sadly not as thick and luscious as my vain self would like.

Now, when I tie my hair up, I get a better idea of where I have less hair growth.

Thank god I’m not completely bald.

Now that I’ve sort of explained why I decided to include this hair serum in my nightly routine, I’ll get into the review portion of this post.

What the LebeL Viege Medicated Essence claims to do:

  • Promote hair growth
  • Stimulate thick, strong hair
  • Relieve itchiness, dandruff
  • Anti-hair loss

What the Lebel Viege Medicated Essence contains:

  • Ginseng extract (frankly I love ginseng hair products for the cooling sensation, and the herbal and relaxing fragrance)
  • Mulberry bark extract
  • Licorice leaf extract
  • Bamboo root extract

The hair tonic smells very herbal, but also clean, refreshing with a sweet berry-like aroma to it. When you apply it to your scalp, it feels very clean, fresh and also incredibly soothing, tingly and cooling.

After having used this a couple of times every few days, I’ve seen a slight improvement in that now I see more baby hairs uncurling in my temples and just above the ears! While it isn’t a drastic change, I would say that there has been a difference after using about 10% of the bottle. I think for now, one of my main concerns is how to ensure that the essence is really applied to the more worrying areas, because since this is a liquid product, it will have a tendency to drip past my ears and down my neck, if you get what I mean. I’m sill alternating between direct spritzing and applying it to the roots of my hair and scalp with my hands.

Anyway, I’m quite excited to see how this pans out when I’m finally done with this product! It really seems to last a long time so don’t let the price tag daunt you too much if you’re considering this. Fingers crossed that this product will work its magic on my hairline!

First and foremost, this post is really long overdue! I feel quite bad because I’ve had these skincare products in my bathroom for the longest time. On the bright side, I now have the chance to do a proper review of all of these amazing skincare products from Olive Singapore.

This olive-based skincare line comes from New Zealand, so you know it’s of good, all-natural quality! Not only are these products 100% organic, they are also cruelty-free. Fun fact that I learned: the olive oil and olive extracts used in these products comes from an olive estate in NZ owned by the company.

Often associated with health, wellness and nourishment, the olive tree was considered in ancient times to be a vital provider of food, skincare, and medicine. To this day, olive oil is still consumed and used widely in cooking and also in beauty products.

So what’s great about olive oil? Olive oil is perfect for all skin types, even for oily skin. This is something I learned recently! Olive extract helps the skin to lock in moisture, whilst reducing the overproduction of oil. So it’s a win-win situation.

Some of the products from Olive Singapore that I have had the chance to try include:- the 100% Natural Skincare Oil, Pomegranate Hand and Nail Cream, Clarifying Face Wash, Nourishing Day Cream, Moisturising Night Cream, and the 100% Natural All Purpose Balm. Read on to find out what I think of each of these amazing olive-based skincare goodies!

Clarifying Face Wash
I really liked using this all natural face wash! It’s so lovely, and contains angelica root extract and pure olive leaf extract. I use this to prevent whiteheads, blackheads, and spots. After using it, my skin looks really clear and feels less congested. I love how it doesn’t lather too much, which means it’s really natural and free of any unnecessary chemicals. I’ld recommend this if you have oily skin, combination skin, and/or sensitive skin!

Olive Singapore

Natural Soap Bar and Oatmeal Soap Bar

These soaps from Olive Singapore are the perfect size and seem to last forever! I’ve actually been using these soaps for a very long time, and thankfully, they never seem to finish. I like how there is a very minimal, light fragrance to it. I like bringing it with me everywhere when I travel, as it fits perfectly into my Muji travel soap container. When you’ve been travelling for hours and can feel all the grime on your face, this soap removes all that grubby feeling. The soap is also non-drying and not harsh on the face. Like the other Olive facial products, these soaps don’t lather excessively, so minimal water is required to wash off the suds.

Olive Singapore

Olive Nourishing Day Cream

This smells sooo good! I love how natural this day cream smells. It’s nice and light and not too heavy, which is perfect for moisturising the skin before applying makeup in the morning. The ingredients include pure olive leaf extract, orchid flower and ginger extract, which help to retain the skin’s natural moisture.
Olive Singapore

Moisturising Night Cream

This night cream provides intense hydration. The smell is also very calming and helps me relax before going to sleep. When I wake up the next morning, my face feels less irritated, moisturised, and supple. Like most of Olive Singapore’s skincare line, this night cream contains olive leaf extract, orchid flower and rosehip oil.

Olive Singapore

Pomegranate Hand and Nail Cream

The small packaging of this cream makes it perfect for bringing everywhere with you! I’ve always felt that it’s so important to keep your hands and fingers moisturised to keep them looking young and healthy. I’ld recommend this if you have dry skin or if you wash your hands frequently. This heavenly 50ml hand and nail cream contains olive squalene and antioxidant-rich pomegranate fruit extract to keep nails and hands looking young and feeling nourished.

Olive Singapore

100% Natural Skincare Oil

This 60ml skincare oil is so lovely that I’m convinced I should be incorporating this more often in my skincare routine. What it does: Remedy skin concerns and improves elasticity. It’s free of mineral oils, preservative, parabens, artificial colours, and all those other nasty things. With pure olive actives, sea buckthorn, calendula, soothing ginger extract, and other antioxidant-rich botanical extracts, this product helps with scars, stretch marks, and other skin concerns like unevenness in skin tone. I’ld recommend this if you have dry and sensitive skin like me, if you have mature skin or the skin concerns mentioned earlier.

Olive Singapore

100% Natural All-Purpose Balm

You can literally use this for any dry spots of skin. As I have a tiny area on my leg which has a bit of eczema, I like using this balm to prevent the skin from becoming dry and scaly. It’s extremely hydrating as it contains pure olive leaf extract, sweet almond and avocado oils, beeswax and shea butter. You can also use it on other parts of the body that are more susceptible to becoming dry, like your elbows, around the finger nails, knees, and corners of the mouth.

Olive Singapore

The Outcall Spa

With Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day just round the corner, why not surprise loved ones with a professional massage from the comfort of your own home? The Outcall Spa brings massages and other spa experiences right to your doorstep. The brainchild of Amber and Stella, two working moms, this startup began just two years ago and has been going strong ever since!

The Outcall Spa
Last weekend, I got the chance to try out their Swedish Massage, and boy was it good! The Outcall Spa was super efficient and professional, they popped by my place on time and set up the massage bed, towels, essential oils and speakers soo quickly. At the speed of light, the Outcall Spa had turned my home into an Outdoor Spa. It looks so professional, don’t you think?

My massage therapist, Joanne, even offered me various essential oils to choose from. Usually when I go for a massage, I don’t get a say in how I smell afterwards, so being able to choose the essential oil was fantastic! There was peppermint, lavender, lemongrass, and grapeseed. All the oils were perfect for tired, aching muscles. I went with lavender because it’s soothing and calming. Joanne asked whether I had sensitive skin. She took the time to explain to me that the grapeseed oil had no scent, and is perfect for people who have sensitive skin or are sensitive to fragrances.

The Outcall Spa
My Swedish massage lasted 90 minutes and I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it! It was absolute bliss. The music was appropriate and relaxing and I could feel myself falling asleep as the massage therapist kneaded away all the knots in my back. By the end of the session, I felt so much better from my head to my toes. All the stress and tension had vanished.

At the end of my massage, Joanne kindly provided me with some piping hot, delicious ginger tea and it was so yummy. I’m not usually a fan of ginger tea, but this one was really good and I finished every drop of it.

The Outcall Spa
On the whole, my massage experience was excellent, and without a doubt, I would definitely recommend it to family and friends alike. It is so convenient and you don’t even need to leave your house!

The Outcall Spa brings a wide variety of massages to your home. They do Swedish Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, Tui-na Massage (traditional Chinese massage), Prenatal Massage, Postnatal Massage, Lymphatic Massage, Fat Diminisher Therapy and Couples Massage! You can also add on a hot blanket treatment which just sounds amazing. The Outcall Spa also does other home spa services. Metapora

Earlier this week I received a Tender Touch Milky Cleanser from Metapora for the purpose of reviewing, and so far my experience has been really great! Delivery was surprisingly fast, and customer service were quick to respond to my queries.

I had quite a lot of make up on the day my order arrived, and as usual, I was pretty sweaty from running errands. My face was feeling so grubby and I could just feel all the pollution and grime just clinging to my face and because it was so humid. The sweat and oil just clings to everything; your face, clothes, your skin… And because you feel so gross you feel kind of low and gross, and you just feel like you need a little pick me up like NOW. Like: I need to be clean again to get out of this funk.

The moment I reached home, I knew I had to open my parcel and try out the Metapora Tender Touch Milky Cleanser straight away. I’d been wanting to try this particular cleanser for a while!

Metapora
The packaging of the Metapora cleanser was so reartwarming and uplifting. The cleanser had this adorable message on it: “Tender Touch Milky Cleanser reminds me to trust myself”. As someone with a lot of self-doubt, this positive, inspiring message really resonated with me. A lot of skincare brands take the angle that people are imperfect, and they need to use skincare products to make themselves perfect. But, with Metapora, I absolutely loved that they have taken this self-love approach to branding by reminding customers to stay positive and to be confident. I feel like it’s much more ethical and true (and a lot less toxic, especially in a world where women are often judged based on their appearances). That was my first impression of Metapora as a brand.

And speaking of skincare, I do think that having a good skincare routine can definitely give you a boost of confidence when you leave the house. If you feel good, you look good. You will automatically exude that confidence.

Next, testing out the Tender Touch Milky Cleanser! First thing that hits me is the fragrance. Firstly, this cleanser is brimming with essential oils, so it would be impossible for it to not have any scent. Anyway, the great thing is that the smell is derived from all natural products. There aren’t any nasty chemicals, and the cleanser is formulated to be free of synthetic bulking agents. It’s incredibly pure and the ingredients are locally sourced in Australia. I could instantly smell cucumber the moment I applied some of the cleanser to my face. When I checked the label of the cleanser I saw that one of the ingredients was cucumber seed oil.

Metapora

To better describe the smell – the cleanser smelled like a spa experience. It’s extremely relaxing and calming. Perfect for hangovers, long work nights, or simply winding down and enjoying the weekend!

There was a lot of natural, essential oil aroma, which can probably be attributed to the amazing combination of neroli, lime essential oil, ylang ylang essential oil, cedarwood atlas essential oil, orange essential oil, and rosehip oil. These essential oils will leave you feeling refreshed and revived, and they also help to hydrate and nourish the skin.

The cleanser is extremely gentle, it isn’t heavy or cloying in any way, and true to its name, it is incredibly soft, almost like washing your face with purely water. I also noticed that there was very little foam/lather, which means it’s really natural and also kind to skin and non-drying!
If you have sensitive skin like myself, you should definitely check out this product. After using it, there wasn’t any dryness or redness. The cleanser also didn’t cause me to have any breakouts. It was super effective at removing all of my makeup, I noted that the gel-like cleanser was actually also quite hydrating! Amazing. My face felt really soft and supple and most important of all, clean after using this product to wash my face.

I felt that there wasn’t a need to apply moisturiser, but if you wish to, you can totally apply a thin layer of moisturiser to hydrate your skin even more. And if you’re in need of a good moisturiser, why not check out Metapora’s wide range of moisturisers and hydrating creams here!

To summarise, the Metapora Tender Touch Milky Cleanser:

  • Suitable for all skin types
  • Natural ingredients
  • 100% Organic
  • Vegan
  • Sourced in Australia
  • Removes all dirt and makeup
  • Made with plenty of amazing essential oils
  • Gives you a boost of confidence and positivity
  • Hydrating
  • Gentle and kind to skin

All in all, I would recommend the Metapora Tender Touch Milky Cleanser as it is such a perfect product!

Today I got an eyelash extension done at Flutters Singapore! I’m really pleased with the result and so excited that I took pictures right after showering. This was my first time getting my lashes done at Flutters Singapore, and my second time getting an eyelash extension in general. My review will be a side-by-side comparison of my first-time experience at another shop versus my experience today at Flutters Singapore!

What was my impression of the shop I went to previously versus Flutters?
My previous experience elsewhere: The shop was not brightly lit. The furniture was quite drab, and there were lots of staff just standing around. There was only one customer getting lashes done. A few customers were getting their nails done.

My experience at Flutters Singapore: Flutters was very pretty and very new, and very nicely decorated! They’ve actually just moved to Downtown Gallery from Duxton. The store was brightly lit and there were several customers getting their eyelash extensions done, which was a good sign!

Who did my lashes?
My previous experience elsewhere: The lady who did my lashes couldn’t speak English, and neither could the other people working there. When she saw me, she exclaimed and asked her English-speaking colleague (who was manning the reception) whether I couldn’t speak Mandarin. I also felt that they were quite pushy and kept trying to make me choose an expensive option. She also scolded me when I told her that I felt pain while she was doing my lashes (and this was after tolerating the pain for some time). Also her hands smelled like a wet dog.

My experience at Flutters Singapore: I felt like they were quite gentle and willing to listen and they also spoke English, which was a huge relief. They explained everything to me, without being pushy, which I really appreciated.

IMG_5124
This is a side view, the lashes look pretty fluttery and thick from the side angle.

What was the number of lashes?
My previous experience elsewhere: I felt a bit cheated because the number of lashes on each eye was unbalanced, and there were less than 25 lashes on each eyelid. And they had quoted me 40 lashes each, or 80 in total. The problem with so few lashes is that when one fell out, there was essentially a very obvious gap in the lash line, which looked ridiculous as more and more lashes fell out. Prior to me removing all the lashes, the number of lashes which fell was quite significant.

My experience at Flutters Singapore: I haven’t counted yet, but there’s apparently 60 lashes on each eyelid. So the total is around 120 extra lashes. If you refer to their website (which I’ve linked down below), you can see that there are a few options available!

How painful was it?
My previous experience elsewhere: It was painful during and after I got the eyelash extensions done. There was nothing I could do about it, so I eventually had to spend some time removing every single lash extension myself. I also had problems OPENING my eyes after closing them, and every time I shut my eyes it hurt. Sleeping was also very painful. I remember tearing while she was doing my lash extensions. People keep telling me “IT ISN’T PAINFUL” but my experience was really awful.

My experience at Flutters Singapore: It wasn’t painful and I would definitely go again!

IMG_5119
This is what a J-curl looks like, a C-curl is much rounder. I prefer this because it’s more natural and like my own lashes. A C-curl is more dramatic and less realistic in my view. There’s a mix of 8 and 10 mm lash extensions here, and I love the effect!

How long did it take?
My previous experience elsewhere: It took less than 30 minutes. Which is very fast. But they did a disappointing job. In the end I did get a refund for my bad experience, but they tricked me and didn’t give me a full refund as promised.

My experience at Flutters Singapore: It took maybe an hour, but it was pretty relaxing. Strangely, I enjoyed the Korean music they were playing, it put me at ease. And I preferred that they took their time to do a proper job and didn’t mess up!

How many lashes fell out?
My previous experience elsewhere: For both experiences, I took a shower 1-2 hours after the eyelash extension procedure was done. Several lashes fell out right after I showered on both sides right after. It was horrifying. Showering was a painful struggle ‘cos I couldn’t open my eyes without them hurting and stinging.

My experience at Flutters Singapore: I could open and close my eyes without pain while I was showering. No lashes fell out! Hurray!

IMG_5120
I also like how the lashes give my eyes an eyeliner-like effect!

What was the lash quality like?
My previous experience elsewhere: The lashes had a C-curl and VERY thick. It was also very plastic-y in texture, and very tough. It often felt like the lashes were poking/stabbing my eyes. I got 6-8mm lashes done.

My experience at Flutters Singapore: The lash extensions are very fine, and very soft. They also look more natural and realistic like real lashes! The lash extensions are not fake and thick looking. I also get a J-shape which is more natural, and I preferred these lashes a lot more. This time I got 8-10mm upon their recommendation, and thankfully they don’t touch my glasses.

What was the drying process like?
My previous experience elsewhere: They kinda forced me to hold a fan while my eyes were shut to dry both my eyes at the same time. It was some distance away from my eyes as well so I don’t think it dried very well.

My experience at Flutters Singapore: They used a fan for each of my eye and not simultaneously. Also the fan was closer to my eye and was more effective.

IMG_5122
From this close-up shot, you can see how fine and delicate the lash extension is. It really blends in with my natural lashes, and I like the criss-cross effect that Flutters Singapore has achieved, it reminds me of falsies.

Conclusion

Overall, I’m very happy with how my lash extensions turned out, and would recommend Flutters Singapore to a friend. If you haven’t gotten eyelash extensions before, do give it a try! If I’m not mistaken, they do eyelash extensions for guys as well.

If you’re interested in finding out more, you can check out Flutters Singapore’s website (you can also submit an appointment request on their website), www.flutters.com.sg They also do mani pedis as well! Since they’re located in the CBD, it’s quite convenient to get to after work.

Location
Flutters Singapore is located at OUE Downtown Gallery 2, 6A Shenton Way, #03-17, Singapore 068815

You can contact them at 6220 0920.

The nearest MRT station is Tanjong Pagar MRT, followed by Downtown MRT/Telok Ayer MRT!

IMG_5123
As you can see, even with my everyday spectacles on, the lash extension doesn’t touch my glasses and my eyes look bigger!
